Sustainability considerations and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance have become important indicators of business success and resilience. The increasing interest in sustainability and ESG is also seen in the financing and investing communities. Gary Millard will explain the relationship and differences between sustainability and ESG, how Suncor uses the nested model of sustainability and scenarios to understand how the influences on the business, and how and why ESG disclosure requirements are evolving in various jurisdictions. Understanding the importance of ESG performance, the relevant metrics used to track ESG performance, and why it contributes to financial resilience of organizations is important for economic and financial practitioners today.

Gary Millard is an environmental scientist working on guiding business and society through our latest energy transition. Gary is an environmental scientist and a Professional Geoscientist (APEGA). He worked as an environmental consultant doing assessment and remediation of contaminated sites before moving to the oil industry in 2004. After having spent a decade cleaning up contamination, he had a few ideas on how it could be prevented and moved into environmental and regulatory compliance in the oil sands business. Most recently, Gary has been working on climate change and energy transition issues and integrating sustainability into business processes. He is a Fellow with the Energy Futures Lab. Outside of work, Gary volunteers with Bike Calgary, an advocacy group helping improve cycling in Calgary.
